Skrmetti’s Impact In South Carolina

For years, the left has pushed the United States squarely into the epicenter of the LGBTQ+ progressive agenda. Since the Obergfell ruling in 2015 that legalized “same sex marriage",” we have seen this drift accelerate dramatically.

Since 2020, we have seen the “T” in LGBTQ take center stage. Transgenderism is, at its core, a rejection of the creation order God ordained in Genesis 1 and 2. While many have understood this to be the case, the acceleration did not stop.

The cultural breaking point was the concerted effort to permit and celebrate performing “gender-affirming care” on minors. In South Carolina, we banned this heinous practice by passing the Help Not Harm bill in 2024; ensuring no child would be victimized by irreversible chemical and surgical mutilation.

Tennessee passed a similar law in their state that was challenged and eventually made its way to the United States Supreme Court. The Skrmetti decision is based on that legal challenge and by a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s right as a state to protect minors from these irreversible and permanent procedures.

PALMETTO FAMILY APPLAUDS SCOTUS RULING IN SKRMETTI

COLUMBIA, S.C. (June 18, 2025) – Palmetto Family Council celebrates today’s 6-3 decision by the United States Supreme Court in United States v. Skrmetti, affirming the state’s authority to protect minors from permanent and irreversible medical procedures. This ruling strengthens the principle that states have the right and duty to safeguard the health and well-being of children while preserving the role of parents in guiding critical healthcare decisions.

“We are pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision which sends a clear message: protecting our children and empowering parents are paramount,” said Steve Pettit, President of Palmetto Family Council. “This ruling upholds the values we cherish in South Carolina—ensuring children in South Carolina are shielded from experimental, irreversible medical procedures and families remain the cornerstone of these deeply personal decisions.”

This victory for common sense and science should empower and encourage states like South Carolina to continue to enact policies that protect children and uphold family values.
