Those of you who remember Watergate will remember the famous question put to opponents of President Nixon: “What did the President know and when did he know it?”

As I search for words to describe the work of Palmetto Family this year, a phrase in that vein comes to mind: “What is Palmetto Family doing, and how are we doing it?” That is to say, what exactly has been the impact Palmetto Family has made on South Carolina in 2017?

First, a little context. About this time last year, several groups began to form whose separate intent would have the combined effect of changing our South Carolina forever. Together, their success would be a nightmare. They included:

  • Pushing for the use of marijuana to be legalized
  • Working to make hard liquor available in every WalMart and WalGreens
  • Defending abortion provider Planned Parenthood from losing state funding
  • Having a state agency investigate businesses based on claims that someone’s gender identity (not gender or sexual orientation) has been violated
  • Standing by while an unjust court rules that a score of church buildings owned by Bible-believing evangelicals could be taken over by heretics from New York
  • Planning for gambling to come to North Charleston
  • Plotting for sex education to downplay abstinence and make “safe sex” the new standard in our public schools
  • Allowing non-conventional storefront churches to be taxed like retail businesses
  • Arguing that men who hire and victimize prostitutes should be kept out of circuit court and away from “real criminals”
  • Saying it is time for doctor-assisted suicide to come to South Carolina

ORAN SMITH
PRESIDENT, PALMETTO FAMILY

These are not idle threats. We have documented evidence of their well-funded efforts.

Second, you must keep an important piece of information in mind. Palmetto Family is doing something no other organization in the state can say: we are fighting for South Carolina family values…on every front…every day.

There are great organizations that work important issues, but not all issues. And, there are organizations that have wonderful people dedicated to the cause of fighting against these evil schemes, but only on a part-time basis.

However, the Lord has seen fit in His providence to preserve Palmetto Family as the only organization in South Carolina that is dedicated full-time to making South Carolina a place where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive and life is cherished.

By God’s grace and with the support of thousands of South Carolina Christians, Palmetto Family fought off every attack against biblical values in 2017. Every. Single. One. Which makes what I’m going to ask next so important.

As the sun sets on 2017, both old and new battles will need to be fought. New well-funded, more powerful opponent will surface. Fresh ill-will toward biblical values will arise.

And so I ask you to consider a question, while keeping in mind all the victories Palmetto Family won and the difficult battles awaiting Christians next year: do you want to imagine a South Carolina without Palmetto Family in 2018?

I doubt it, which is why I have full confidence to ask you to support our work financially. We need every Christian in South Carolina to prayerfully consider donating to our all-important work. No matter how big or how small, your support makes a real impact.

If you believe in the work and mission of Palmetto Family to fight for South Carolina values on every front every day, will you make a secure online donation? Your support will help us keep our dedicated staff on the job defending the values of this state we love!

Thank you for your consideration and support of this VITAL and UNIQUE work. If you’re looking for more proof of our positive impact on South Carolina, below you will find a detailed description of the four main areas where the most impact was made in 2017.

Perhaps the most important of all victories are those accomplished in the statehouse and courtroom. Whether the battle was to defend life or to defeat gambling, Palmetto Family led the charge against every anti-family piece of legislation in South Carolina.

LEGAL VICTORIES

2017 saw several important cases enter the courtrooms, and for each of these matters, Palmetto Family participated in an Amicus Brief to be a voice for Biblical values in the courtroom.

  • In a United States Supreme Court case that threatens to bring state-sponsored gambling to South Carolina, Palmetto Family stood with like-minded organizations who realize that gambling is never as good as its advocates would have us believe.
  • In another Supreme Court case that would have hindered any South Carolina public official from opening a public meeting in prayer, Palmetto Family organized 20 South Carolina state legislators to keep prayer in our government.
  • When 23,000 Bible-believing Christians in South Carolina were victimized by a wrongful decision handed down by the South Carolina Supreme Court, Palmetto Family rallied over 100 South Carolina pastors from 14 different denominations to stand united with their brothers and sisters in defense of their rights and property.
  • Palmetto Family facilitated the Attorney General Opinion condemning an ABA model rule that would have damaged the religious freedom rights of South Carolina lawyers.

In 2017, Palmetto Family also successfully assisted homeschool students in their effort to participate in public school extracurricular activities, which is their lawful right. Palmetto Family even took on the pornography industry, when in a major battle against businesses that sell sexually explicit products, Palmetto Family initiated and won the fight to close down one such store in Columbia’s city limits.

LEGISLATIVE VICTORIES

Combine our legal and legislative victories, and the record really becomes impressive. Our effort to ban one of the most gruesome forms of abortion, dismemberment abortion, paid off and the job will be completed early in the 2018 legislative session. Ditto for a bill seeking to curb human trafficking in South Carolina – a real mar on the Palmetto State. Additionally, Palmetto Family single-handedly halted the construction of a high-stakes bingo-casino hall in North Charleston.

Beyond legislation, Palmetto Family has worked to ensure that faith remains a centerpiece at the statehouse. We helped create the brand-new SC Legislative Family Values Caucus that will push for family-friend legislation in our state.

To sum up, Palmetto Family’s reputation at the South Carolina statehouse and within the walls of the courthouse is impeccable. No organization can boast the successes of Palmetto Family in 2017.

Palmetto Family has been a fearless and effective advocate for strengthening South Carolina families for nearly 20 years. Their record of success as our state’s only independent, faith-based public policy organization is impressive.”

Before our pride in our accomplishments for faith, family and freedom in South Carolina seeps out any further, it’s paramount to recognize who really made those victories a reality – you, the South Carolina Christians.

In 2017, we decided to double-down on our efforts to tap into the grassroots and create an army of South Carolinians who stand for biblical values in the Palmetto State. It’s no surprise then that 2017 was one of our most successful years.

NEHEMIAH NETWORK

Palmetto Family commissioned the creation of its pastor coalition, the Nehemiah Network, in late 2016. But it wasn’t until 2017 that the impact was felt, and without a doubt, its positive impact certainly was felt this year.

Pastor's Day at the Statehouse

The first-ever Nehemiah Network Pastor's Day at the Statehouse was an amazing success. Here are a few highlights from the incredible day.

Posted by Palmetto Family Council on Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Over 150 South Carolina pastors from all over our state gathered for Pastors’ Day at the Statehouse in January. Each pastor met and prayed with their legislator, and learned the inner-workings of the South Carolina statehouse. That day dawned the beginning of many fruitful relationships between South Carolina faith leaders and political leaders, and also signaled the beginning of an unstoppable movement.

As of today, every single South Carolina legislator has been matched to a pastor from his or her district. Pastors are tasked with the responsibility of spiritually leading their legislators in the decisions made at the statehouse.

Over 30 state legislators have joined the Nehemiah Network for its weekly prayer conference call, and these pastors have faithfully prayed for over 50 hours in joint prayer for our state and country.

The Nehemiah Network even orchestrated closed-door meetings with Representative Ralph Norman and South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster. These events had no media present which facilitated an open discussion and prayer time. Each now know that over 300 pastors in their state are keeping them accountable for their actions. Even more importantly, they know that over 300 pastors are consistently praying that God would protect and guide them as they make important decisions for South Carolina.

The Nehemiah Network was relied on to accomplishing several of the legislative victories mentioned above, such as outlawing dismemberment abortion and ending the effort to build a bingo hall in North Charleston.

The largest state-based pastor network can now be found right here in the Palmetto State, and 2017 was proof of how important faith leaders are to South Carolina’s success.

The final piece of the Palmetto Family 2017 impact puzzle was our effort to inform and empower every South Carolina citizen on every issue affecting their faith, family and freedom.

A simple browsing of our website would reveal that Palmetto Family has become the one-stop-shop for information on the critical issues facing the Palmetto State. News stories, blog posts, research papers and videos all contributed to making Palmetto Family followers the most informed of all South Carolinians.

Awareness of issues such as human trafficking, attacks on religious freedom, the dangers of pornography and gambling are now higher than ever. And not just among South Carolina’s citizens – state legislators have taken notice.

In a noisy world, everyone needs a trusted source to guide their thinking on the all-important issues of today. Palmetto Family continues to be that source for South Carolina Christians and we won’t stop until we’ve become the most cutting-edge, modern, recognizable brand in the Palmetto State.

Making South Carolina a place where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive and life is cherished – the sole goal of Palmetto Family. Will you help us accomplish our goal in 2018 by financially supporting our work?
