When the legislature returned for the second year of the 2017-2018 General Assembly, things were looking rather grim to say the least. The courts had struck down a bill limiting the number of liquor stores an entity could own, a loosely-written medical marijuana bill was gaining traction due to the opioid crisis, and pro-life legislation was competing with itself (dismemberment abortion ban vs. personhood legislation).

But that has all changed in the last several weeks. Medical marijuana legislation was modified (then killed), liquor store ownership is back at a limit of three stores and a bill banning dismemberment abortions was just set for a Special Order vote in the Senate.

This is all familiar to us here at Palmetto Family. During our 25-year existence, we have educated the church on between 50 and 100 bills. All the good legislation did not pass without a fight. And the bad bills involved a showdown every time! No legislation is easy, particularly in the areas Palmetto Family has chosen to work – family, marriage, faith, freedom and life – but the wins are sweet.

We are not to the finish line yet on the 122nd General Assembly but we can see it. Hang in there with us for a few more weeks, particularly on the Dismemberment Abortion Ban. Your efforts to speak truth to power on behalf of the most important institution – family – will pay dividends in the future.

Sometimes a light surprises
The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
With healing in His wings;
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

– William Cowper (1731-1800)
